The study aims to assess the nutritional status amongst the institutionalized elderly. The research was carried out in the Abrigo Amantino Câmara, located in Mossoró/RN. It is a field research, descriptive of a quantitative approach, whose research unit consisted of an anthropometric assessment, based on the BMI (Body Mass Index) performed in all the elderly of the institution. The sample consisted of 37 elderly (19 men and 18 women) aged 60-86 years. The data collected show that for men, the percentage of BMI classification was 37% eutrophy, 37% underweight and 26% overweight. For women, the distribution of BMI resulted in 40% underweight, 40% overweight and 20% eutrophy. Therefore, we must be aware of the changes in body composition that occur in old age: as decreased stature, reduced amount of water, decreased lean body, higher percentage of fat and greater incidence of NCD (Noncommunicable Diseases) when compared to the young age people. Thereby, we can infer from the results of this case study a different classification between men and women regarding nutritional status, as presented in the results. And, both of them have a risk of nutritional deficiencies. Thus, disease prevention and weight control along with old age advancing are health actions of great importance for the maintenance of a healthy life.Downloads
